Fern felt like she’d only just closed her eyes when she was woken by someone moaning. She glanced across to see Jezzine thrashing in her bed.

Alarmed, Fern padded over to the bed and shook her shoulder. “What’s the matter?” she whispered.

Jezzine jerked upright, wide-eyed, her body in a lather of sweat. She grasped Fern’s arm, digging in her fingers urgently. “They’re coming up the corridor.”

It took a second to register what she’d said, but then Fern flew into action. “There’s a small room next to the bed where we can hide. I emptied it out in case they came back. It’ll be a squeeze but we’ll fit. They won’t find us there.”

She ran over to her bed, hastily pulling down the curtains hanging from the carved wood canopy above the fourposter. “This may slow them down a little,” she muttered.

Then she dashed over to the wall and pressed the hidden button. As soon as the door slid open, she pushed Jezzine through and followed her in.

“If you can wriggle around, we can both see through the slit,” Fern whispered.

They had barely arranged themselves comfortably when the front door opened slowly. Two cloaked figures shimmered into view.

There was no mistaking what they had come to do.

Daggers were clutched in their hands.
